Sean Gelael Gabung Prema Racing di Musim 2018

detiksport Sean Gelael akan punya tim baru di Formula 2 pada musim 2018. Pebalap Indonesia yang kini berusia 21 tahun itu telah mencapai kesepakatan dengan tim Prema Racing.
Kepastian bergabungnya Sean diumumkan oleh prinsipal tim Prema Racing, Rene Rosin, dalam rilis yang diterima detikSport, Senin (20/11/2017).
"Saya bangga untuk menyambut Sean di tim kami. Kami butuh pebalap seperti Sean yang memiliki fakta pengalaman balap yang mumpuni untuk penyesuaian mobil baru yang akan dipakai pada musim balap 2018," ujar Rosin.
Rosin cukup terkesan dengan hasil yang diraih Sean sebagai pebalap penguji dalam beberapa sesi latihan bebas bersama tim Formula 1 Toro Rosso. Rosin juga menilai positif perjalanan karier Sean, yang dimulai dari Formula Abarth dan Formula Pilota, Formula 3, dan Formula Renault 3.5 sebelum di GP2 Series yang kini berganti nama menjadi Formula 2. Penampilan Sean pada balapan ketahanan Asian Le Mans Series juga tak luput dari pengamatannya.
Tim Prema Racing mulai tampil di GP2 Series pada musim 2016. Mereka langsung sukses merebut gelar ganda pada musim debutnya itu. Selain menjadi tim juara, Prema Racing juga mengantarkan Pierre Gasly sebagai juara dunia GP2.
Prema Racing berpeluang mengulang suksesnya itu pada musim ini. Pebalap mereka, Charles Leclerc, telah dipastikan menjadi juara dunia Formula 2. Sementara di klasemen tim, Prema Racing juga masih memimpin.
"Musim 2018 tidak akan mudah karena banyak perubahan dengan mobil baru dan beberapa regulasi baru di Formula 2. Namun demikian kami tetap yakin dengan pengalaman Sean, dia akan bisa memenuhi harapan kami dan berkontribusi untuk kesuksesan tim," kata Rosin.
Pada musim 2018, Sean akan bertandem dengan pebalap Belanda, Nyck de Vries, di Prema Racing. Sean dan De Vries akan menjajal mobil baru tim Prema di Sirkuit Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, seusai balapan seri terakhir F2 musim ini. detiksport
"Ini merupakan impian dan kesempatan besar setiap pebalap untuk bisa bergabung dengan tim yang sudah meraih banyak kesuksesan dan memiliki sejarah yang panjang. Tentu saya berharap kami bisa bekerja sama untuk membangun tim yang solid. Tantangannya tidak mudah karena musim depan semuanya serba baru," ujar Sean.
Sean mengatakan, sesi latihan dan uji coba setelah balapan terakhir F2 di Abu Dhabi akan menjadi hari yang penting untuk membangun momentum persiapan tim. "Saya sangat antusias untuk memulai dan berharap bisa mendapat hasil yang lebih bagus pada musim balap ketiga di Formula 2," tuturnya.
Untuk musim balap 2018, penyelenggara balapan sudah menetapkan kalender balap yang berisi 12 seri dengan total 24 balapan. Seri pertama akan dimulai di Sirkuit Sakhir, Bahrain, pada tanggal 6-8 April 2018. Sementara balapan terakhir dilangsungkan di sirkuit Yas Marina pada tanggal 23-25 November 2018.
